Barbara Eder
Director
Barbara Eder, born in Eisenstadt in 1976, is a renowned Austrian director, screenwriter, and documentary filmmaker. She studied directing at the Film Academy of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Her feature film debut Inside America (2010), which she both directed and wrote, premiered at the Diagonale 2010 and was awarded the Max Ophüls Special Jury Prize in 2011. The film sheds light on the lives of teenagers at a Texas high school and received much attention from critics and audiences alike. In 2015, Barbara Eder released the feature film THANK YOU FOR BOMBING (also known as GOOD MORNING KABUL), which was screened in competition at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film won the Golden Eye Award for Best Feature Film at the Zurich Film Festival and various awards at the Vienna Film Prize in 2016. Eder is also successful in television: in 2017, she directed her first episode of the crime series Tatort for ORF, entitled “Virus.” In 2018, she directed the thriller Wiener Blut, which was broadcast on ZDF and ORF. In 2019, Eder directed the Netflix series Barbaren and in 2023 she was responsible for the ZDF series DER SCHWARM, directing four of the eight episodes. Her style is characterized by a keen sense of visual language: Eder combines documentary sensitivity with character-focused narrative forms, which is evident in both her feature films and TV projects. Barbara Eder is one of the influential voices in Austrian cinema and television and continues her work with both creative and aesthetic success.
