Dieter Wien
Actor
Dieter Wien, born in Danzig in 1934, is one of the most influential actors who helped shape East German cinema and later German television for decades. Between 1963 and 2008, he appeared in well over a hundred film and television productions, including DEFA feature films and popular series. His acting is characterized by a calm, clear presence that carries through both dramatic material and children's and family films. An early and still central title in his filmography is KÄUZCHENKUHLE (1969, directed by Walter Beck). In it, Wien plays Kohlweis, a character deeply entangled in the criminal plot and the village's wartime past. The film combines suspense with historical memory and demonstrates Wien's ability to imbue an ambivalent character with force and humanity. Other important, documented DEFA works include Das Kaninchen bin ich (I Am the Rabbit, 1965) and Karla (1965). In both films, Wien represents a modern, socially conscious style of acting that reflects the tone of GDR auteur cinema. In “Der Bärenhäuter” (1985, also directed by Walter Beck), he expands this profile in a fairy-tale setting. In addition to cinema, he remained a constant presence on television, appearing in series such as “Polizeiruf 110” and ‘Tatort’ as well as later series such as “Familie Dr. Kleist.” Dieter Wien thus stands for a long, reliable career that spans from early DEFA roles to contemporary TV productions without losing any of his artistic independence.
