Emily Mortimer
Actor
Emily Mortimer, born in London in 1971, is a British actress and screenwriter who has been appearing in international film and TV productions since the 1990s. After studying at Oxford, she began performing on stage and soon became known for her finely balanced, intelligent roles in literary adaptations and modern arthouse cinema. Her most famous later cinema appearance is in THE BOOKSHOP (2017, directed by Isabel Coixet). As Florence Green, Mortimer carries the film almost single-handedly, portraying a quiet but determined woman who seeks her own path in a conservative coastal town. The film particularly highlighted her strength for subtle emotions and precise character work. Representative films in her career include Lovely & Amazing (2001), for which she won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress, as well as Match Point (2005) by Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island (2010). In “Paddington” (2014) and “Paddington 2” (2017), she shows her comedic side to a wide family audience without losing her nuanced style. Mortimer has also played memorable roles on television. In the HBO series The Newsroom (2012 to 2014), she played producer Mackenzie McHale, while in Doll & Em (2013 to 2015), she not only took on a leading role, but also helped shape the series as a co-creator and writer. Her later work in the miniseries “The Pursuit of Love” (2021) once again underscores her flair for literary material and complex emotional states. Overall, Emily Mortimer represents a versatile, multi-award-winning career between the big screen and television.
