Eva-Maria Hagen
Actor
Eva-Maria Hagen (born Eva-Maria Buchholz on October 19, 1934, in Költschen, Brandenburg, † August 16, 2022, in Hamburg) was an outstanding German actress, singer, painter, and author. Her artistic career began with an apprenticeship as a machine fitter, followed by acting training in Berlin from 1952 and her theater debut at the Berliner Ensemble under Bertolt Brecht. In 1957, she made her film debut in the DEFA comedy “Vergeßt mir meine Traudel nicht” (Don't Forget My Traudel), which quickly made her famous in the GDR. In 1967, she appeared in the light-hearted DEFA production MEINE FREUNDIN SYBILLE (My Friend Sybille) in the role of Helena – a comedy about a chaotic trip to the Black Sea, in which she shone as part of the cast. Political conflicts shaped her life: because of her close connection to the dissident singer-songwriter Wolf Biermann, she was persecuted from the mid-1960s onwards, banned from working in 1976, and stripped of her GDR citizenship in 1977 – shortly afterwards she moved to West Germany. In the West, she built a second artistic career as a chanson singer, author, painter, and actress. In 1999, she received the prestigious Carl Zuckmayer Medal for her autobiographical work Eva und der Wolf (Eva and the Wolf).
