A gripping story of the brilliant herbal healer Jan Mikolášek, whose singular talents became a liability.

A gripping story of the brilliant herbal healer Jan Mikolášek, whose singular talents became a liability.

A man heals with herbs where doctors fail. His skills attract ordinary people and political figures alike – but in the midst of war, where the balance of power shifts daily, an extraordinary gift can also become a threat. Those who heal question the established order.

Agnieszka Holland's film CHARLATAN tells the true story of Czech miracle healer Jan Mikolášek. Amidst the turmoil of Nazism, communism, and the post-war period, Mikolášek rises to become a celebrated healer – but his homosexuality and proximity to politically controversial figures make him vulnerable. Together with his assistant, he comes under the scrutiny of the state, which soon questions not only his methods but his very existence.

CHARLATAN celebrated its world premiere at the 2020 Berlinale and has been shown at numerous international festivals, including the Cleveland International Film Festival, the Hong Kong International Film Festival, and the Transilvania International Film Festival. The film has won several awards, including five Český lev (Czech Lion) awards for Best Film, Best Director (Agnieszka Holland), Best Actor (Ivan Trojan), Best Cinematography, and Best Sound. It was also nominated for the European Film Award in the Best Director category.

Based on real events, this historical drama is more than a classic biography: it paints a picture of a man caught between light and shadow, intuition and power. With powerful visual language and great sensitivity, Holland directs a story that explores the boundaries between belief in miracles, political calculation, and private passion.
