Born on July 19, 1951, in the Bronx, New York City, Ferrara's career began in the late 1970s, initially making short films and low-budget genre movies. His breakout came with the 1981 crime film "Ms. 45," which garnered attention for its bold themes and daring storytelling.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Ferrara directed a series of critically acclaimed films, including "King of New York" (1990) starring Christopher Walken, and "Bad Lieutenant" (1992) featuring Harvey Keitel, which was particularly noted for its raw portrayal of a corrupt, drug-addicted police officer. He continued to push boundaries with films like "The Addiction" (1995), a vampire horror that received a nomination at the Berlin Film Festival.
