Claus Holm (born August 4, 1918 in Bochum; died September 21, 1996 in Berlin) was a German actor who was one of the defining faces of DEFA cinema in the post-war period. His most internationally renowned film was EHE IM SCHATTEN (Marriage in the Shadows, 1947, directed by Kurt Maetzig), in which he played the role of Dr. Herbert Blohm. The film deals with the tragic fate of an actor couple during the Nazi era and was one of the most successful films of the early post-war period. After leaving the GDR in 1953, Holm continued his career in the West. His most notable feature films include Razzia (1947, directed by Werner Klingler), in which he played Karl Lorenz, The Tiger of Eschnapur (1959, directed by Fritz Lang) and The Indian Tomb (1959, directed by Fritz Lang), which also brought him international recognition. Claus Holm was particularly prominent on television in the groundbreaking science fiction series Raumpatrouille Orion (1966, role: Hasso Sigbjörnson), which made him known to a wide audience. He later appeared in the aforementioned film adaptation of Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980, directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder), which impressively documented his long-standing commitment to film and television. Claus Holm combined an impressive range of DEFA classics, Heimat films, adventure films, and cult TV series. His contribution to German film history will never be forgotten.
