A young man caught between two worlds: during the day, he sends out job applications and fulfills his duties; at night, he works in a sex shop. Ibrahim tries to live up to his strict Muslim family's expectations while keeping his homosexuality a secret. When he meets Alexander, a show wrestler with a criminal background, his already fragile double life is finally shattered. Between cautious admiration and burning desire, a story begins that questions everything: origin, sexuality, identity.
Synopsis
What begins as quiet observation develops into amour fou. Ibrahim falls in love—with no prospect of reciprocity, but with the hope that affection can bridge all differences. Alexander, on the other hand, remains emotionally elusive: sometimes friendly, sometimes distant, sometimes vulnerable. The relationship between the two men oscillates between closeness and rejection, between desire and reality and allows them to grow in unexpected ways.
WHERE ARE YOU GOING, HABIBI? is a queer independent film from Germany that surprises with a mixture of milieu study and romantic tragicomedy. Director Tor Iben stages the story with restrained realism, without resorting to cheap effects. Instead, the film focuses on quiet gestures, believable characters, and the emotional power of an impossible love. The film has been presented at the Montreal World Film Festival and the International Queer Film Festival in Hamburg, among others.
