Mattie (Greta Gerwig) and James (Joe Swanberg) are deeply in love. But the distance between them has taken its toll. As they struggle with the distance between New York and Chicago, their visits remind them more of the difficulties than the beautiful aspects of their relationship. Joe Swanberg and Greta Gerwig follow up HANNAH TAKES THE STAIRS with NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS, an intimate portrayal of longing and confusion. This time, Swanberg stars alongside Gerwig, and Gerwig co-directs with Swanberg.
Greta Gerwig and Joe Swanberg, once again explore intimate relationship patterns – this time also as the lead actors. The independent film follows two people whose long-distance relationship between New York and Chicago is slowly falling apart.
Without a script and with improvised dialogue, a radical honesty emerges that borders on documentary form. The film premiered in 2008 at the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) and was also shown at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles. As one of the early works of the mumblecore movement, it was widely discussed for its unsparing emotionality and formal reduction. With simple means, it tells of the failure of closeness—and what remains of it.
