August Diehl, born in Berlin in 1976, is one of the most prominent actors in German and international cinema. He rose to fame with his leading role in the film “23 – Nothing is as it seems” (1998, directed by Hans-Christian Schmid), in which he played the hacktivist Karl Koch. For this performance, he received the Bavarian Film Award for Best Young Actor, laying the foundation for a remarkable career. In the following years, Diehl appeared in numerous successful productions. Particularly noteworthy is his role in the Oscar-winning drama “The Counterfeiters” (2007, directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky), which was internationally acclaimed. He has also established himself in international cinema, among other things through his participation in Quentin Tarantino's “Inglourious Basterds” (2009), where he appeared as an SS officer in a memorable scene. In “Salt” (2010, directed by Phillip Noyce), he stood alongside Angelina Jolie in front of the camera and once again proved his versatility. An important film in his career is LAYLA FOURIE (2013, directed by Pia Marais), a German-South African co-production in which Diehl played a central role. The drama was shown in competition at the Berlinale and attracted international attention. With his precise performance, he added another artistically demanding contribution to his filmography. August Diehl also appeared in “Wer wenn nicht wir” (2010, directed by Andres Veiel), a film about the history of the RAF that won numerous awards.
