He directed numerous episodes of the sketch comedy series *Portlandia* (2012–2018), work for which he received multiple Emmy nominations as a writer and producer. His other television directing credits include series such as *Kroll Show* and *At Home with Amy Sedaris*. Benz's feature film directorial debut, the mockumentary *The Nowhere Inn* (2020) starring St. Vincent and Carrie Brownstein, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
