Helmut Berger was one of the most striking personalities in European cinema and became an international symbol of beauty, excess, and ambivalence in the 1960s and 1970s. The Austrian actor began his career as the muse and leading actor of Luchino Visconti, with whom he had a close artistic and personal relationship. His breakthrough came with “The Damned” (1969), for which he received worldwide recognition and was honored at the Cannes Film Festival. Berger returned to the screen in Albert Serra's LIBERTÉ (2019). The film, which was presented in competition at Cannes, shows him as the Duke of Walchen in a radical examination of power, desire, and moral decadence. Berger's presence lends Serra's film a distinctive aura of elegance and transience, marking a late high point in his career. His best-known works include Ludwig II (1972) and Conversation Piece (1974), both directed by Luchino Visconti. With The Godfather Part III (1990) by Francis Ford Coppola, Berger also proved his versatility in international productions. His performances combined aristocratic distance with emotional vulnerability—a combination that made him an icon of auteur cinema. Helmut Berger received numerous awards for his achievements, including the David di Donatello Award, the Berlinale Teddy Award, and a Golden Globe nomination.
