Leos Carax, born November 22, 1960, in Suresnes near Paris, is a French film director who is considered the enfant terrible of cinema. He first attracted attention in 1984 with his debut film Boy Meets Girl, which won the Prix de la jeunesse at the Cannes Film Festival. His second feature film, Mauvais Sang (1986, directed by Leos Carax), was an artistic success and was screened at the Berlinale. Other well-known works include Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (1991, directed by Leos Carax), which emerged from an elaborate production, and the more artistic Pola X (1999). Unique in his oeuvre is HOLY MOTIONS (2012, directed by Leos Carax), a surreal fantasy drama in which Denis Lavant travels through Paris for a day in changing identities, accompanied by a moving limousine that takes him to obscure appointments. The film premiered at Cannes in 2012 and was nominated for the Palme d'Or. Several decades after his first success, Carax presented his English-language musical Annette (2021, directed by Leos Carax) in 2021. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where Carax received the award for Best Director. Leos Carax is known for his poetic aesthetic, narrative styles that push the boundaries of storytelling, and his intense collaboration with actor Denis Lavant. HOLY MOTORS is now considered his most visionary work and a benchmark for modern cinematic avant-garde.
