Mathieu Amalric
ActorMathieu Amalric (born October 25, 1965 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France) is a French actor and director. He became known for his role in Comment je me suis disputé… (ma vie sexuelle) (1996, directed by Arnaud Desplechin), for which he won the César Award for Most Promising Actor in 1997. He gained international attention for his role in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007, directed by Julian Schnabel), for which he won the César Award for Best Actor in 2008.
In A SECRET (2007, directed by Claude Miller), he played François Grimbert in a drama about repressed family history and Jewish identity. The film was nominated for numerous César Awards and received international acclaim. Amalric has also appeared in international productions such as Quantum of Solace (2008, directed by Marc Forster) as Bond's adversary Dominic Greene, as well as in The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014, directed by Wes Anderson) and The French Dispatch (2021, directed by Wes Anderson).
He has also enjoyed success as a director: On Tour (2010) won him the Best Director award at Cannes. Other films such as The Blue Room (2014) and Barbara (2017) have won awards at international festivals. Barbara received the Prix Jean Vigo, the Louis Delluc Prize, and the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes, among others.
With his versatility between acting and directing, Mathieu Amalric is now one of the most prominent representatives of European cinema and has been honored with several prestigious awards.
