Rainer Frimmel

Director
Rainer Frimmel is an Austrian director, screenwriter, producer, and cinematographer who is considered one of the most influential voices in contemporary documentary and auteur cinema. He was born in Vienna and studied photography and cinematography before beginning to realize film projects in the early 1990s. Since 1996, he has worked closely with director Tizza Covi; together they founded the production company Vento Film in 2002 to realize their work independently. Frimmel's work is characterized by a clear visual sensibility, long periods of observation, and an open view of people and their living environments. His early films include Das ist alles (2001) and Babooska (2005), followed by La Pivellina (2009), the duo's first feature film, which was shown at over a hundred international festivals and won numerous awards. Other important films include Der Glanz des Tages (2012), Mister Universo (2016), and Aufzeichnungen aus der Unterwelt (2020). Many of these works have been celebrated for their human intimacy and formal clarity. With Vera (2022), a semi-documentary portrait of actress Vera Gemma, Frimmel and Covi cemented their position in international cinema: The film was shown in the Orizzonti competition at the Venice Film Festival, among others, and won an award for best director. His current project, The Loneliest Man in Town (2026), has been invited to compete at the Berlin International Film Festival and once again showcases his characteristic hybrid approach between documentary intimacy and narrative fiction. Rainer Frimmel is considered one of Austria's most important artistic voices: his films combine aesthetic precision, empathetic characterization, and a continuous exploration of reality, memory, and time—always carried by an original cinematic signature.
