Rolf Ludwig, born on July 28, 1925, in Stockholm and died on March 27, 1999, in Berlin, was one of the most famous and versatile actors in the GDR. He was described in an obituary in the Tagesschau news program as a jack-of-all-trades on Berlin's major theater stages. His performances left their mark on influential DEFA and television films. He appeared as the king in the humorous fairy tale film WER REISST DEN GLEICH VOR’M TEUFEL AUS? (1978, directed by Egon Schlegel), a cinematic adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs. In the classic DEFA fairy tale DAS FEUERZEUG (1959, directed by Siegfried Hartmann), he played a leading role as a soldier who grants wishes by means of a magic lighter. In the children's film MORITZ IN DER LITFAßSÄULE (1983, directed by Rolf Losansky), he makes a memorable appearance as a street sweeper who teaches little Moritz about friendship and the meaning of life. And in the cult GDR film DIE LEGENDE VON PAUL UND PAULA (1973, directed by Heiner Carow), he was part of the ensemble whose tragic love story remains part of cinema history to this day. In addition, Rolf Ludwig appeared regularly in theater productions and radio plays for decades, performing with expressiveness and great stage presence and earning himself a place in cultural memory through his nuanced, profound roles.
