Rolf Römer

Rolf Römer, born Rolf Specht on September 20, 1935, in Königswinter and died on March 15, 2000, in Berlin, was a prominent German actor, director, and screenwriter who left a lasting mark on DEFA productions in particular. He studied acting at the HFF Potsdam-Babelsberg until 1960 and began his career with early film roles and stage engagements. In the relationship drama JAHRGANG 45 (1966, directed by Jürgen Böttcher), he played the male lead role of Al, a car mechanic – a sensitive portrayal of a broken marriage in the socially critical DEFA style. In the DEFA western DIE SÖHNE DER GROßEN BÄRIN (1966, directed by Josef Mach), Rolf Römer played Tobias, a member of a historical Native American resistance group – the film is considered a stylistically influential representative of GDR Native American films. He later appeared in TECUMSEH (1972, directed by Hans Kratzert), a historical western about the legendary Shawnee chief and his resistance to US expansionism – Rolf Römer played a supporting role in a context of great significance for film culture. He also worked as a director and screenwriter, for example for the DEFA crime series Polizeiruf 110 – he directed and wrote the screenplay for the episode “Schuldig” (1978). In addition, Römer appeared in popular series and films such as Chingachgook, die große Schlange, He, Du! and numerous other DEFA productions. Rolf Römer embodies German film history through roles with depth, genre diversity, and creative complexity – as an actor, filmmaker, and influential figure in East German cinema.
