Stellan Skarsgård, born in Gothenburg in 1951, is one of Sweden's most internationally successful actors. His career began at a young age on television before he gained widespread recognition with roles in Swedish productions. He made his international breakthrough in the 1990s with Lars von Trier's drama “Breaking the Waves” (1996, directed by Lars von Trier), which won an award at the Cannes Film Festival and established Skarsgård as a charismatic character actor worldwide. Since then, he has appeared in numerous successful productions, including major Hollywood films such as “Good Will Hunting” (1997, directed by Gus Van Sant), “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest” (2006, directed by Gore Verbinski) and “Mamma Mia!” (2008, directed by Phyllida Lloyd). He also demonstrated his versatility in demanding arthouse productions such as “Dogville” (2003, directed by Lars von Trier). In addition to these major successes, Skarsgård also took on roles in special projects. In the animated film KOMMISSAR GORDON & BUFFY (2017, directed by Linda Hambäck), he lent his voice to the frog detective Gordon, once again proving his versatility. In CITY OF GHOSTS (2002, directed by Matt Dillon), he played the character Joseph Kaspar in a dark thriller about a case of fraud in the criminal underworld. Both films showcase the breadth of his work, ranging from animated films to thrillers and international cinema. Skarsgård has received numerous awards for his acting achievements. These include the Silver Bear at the Berlinale for “Håkon Håkonsson” (1997) and a Golden Globe Award in 2020 for his role in the miniseries “Chernobyl.” In addition, he has been honored with numerous national and international awards, underscoring his position as one of Europe's most important actors.
