William Shimell

Actor
William Shimell is a British opera singer and actor who has enjoyed international success both on stage and on camera. Originally known for his work at leading opera houses such as the Royal Opera in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Shimell expanded his artistic spectrum to include acting in 2010. He took on his first film role in THE LOVER (2010), directed by Abbas Kiarostami. In the film, he plays the writer James Miller alongside Juliette Binoche. The production was shown at the Cannes International Film Festival and earned Binoche the award for Best Actress. With this performance, Shimell established himself as a convincing actor outside the world of opera. Two years later, he appeared in Michael Haneke's multi-award-winning drama Amour (2012), which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and received numerous international awards. In 2014, he played a supporting role in Aloft by Claudia Llosa, continuing his film career. His work is characterized by precise posture, controlled expressiveness, and an extraordinary stage presence, which draws on his long experience as an opera singer. Shimell's transition between music and film is rare and remarkable—he is one of the few artists who performs convincingly in both worlds. Today, he continues to perform on international opera stages and occasionally appears in film productions, underscoring his versatile artistic personality.
