1915: The Armenian Nazaret lives a happy life with his wife and daughters in Mardin. Until one night, Turkish troops drag him out of his house and force him to work on road construction. The situation escalates. He and his fellow prisoners have their throats slit. But Nazaret survives, manages to escape, and finds only dying people in a camp in the desert.

The extraordinary cast proved to be one of the most important factors in the success of Soul Kitchen. Fatih Akin relied on a proven ensemble from his earlier productions, which his film company aptly described as a “best-of cast”.

Adam, born in Austria in 1995, has already made a name for himself internationally as a cameraman, while Mandy, born in Berlin in 1993, comes from a traditional family of tailors and transfers her passion for fine art and interior design to the world of film. STAINED SKIN takes us to a dystopian textile factory where two young workers, Alba and Samy, are caught up in the rhythmic beat of the machines. The story takes a mystical turn when Alba begins to tell the story of Nanami, a girl who lives at the bottom of the sea and is trying to free herself from enslavement. The film merges reality and fairy tale and metaphorically explores the abuses of the fast fashion industry. In their first directorial collaboration, Adam and Mandy have pushed the boundaries of their previous roles as cinematographer and production designer and, together with the magical animation of Andrei Ebinca, have created a visually stunning and profound narrative.

Laetitia Masson's new film SUMMER FROST (with Clémence Poésy) will soon be shown on SOONER and promises an extraordinary film experience. The film shows in a poetic and visually stunning way how ten strangers meet during an unusual cold spell in summer in France. These encounters, imbued with intense emotions and self-reflection, paint a haunting portrait of the human soul. In an episodic structure, Masson interweaves themes such as loneliness, love and the search for connection against a surreal backdrop.

In SOONERCAST, Masson talks to Sebastian Urzendowsky about her work. The interview was held in French, the subtitled version can be seen on YouTube. She sees her films less as political statements than as in-depth explorations of the human condition. Although she does not see herself as a feminist filmmaker, her characters are often lonely figures in search of love, which they confuse with attachment. We spoke to him about these questions and his connection to his home village of Napierville.

Why did Philippe Gregoire want to become a filmmaker and why does he love car racing?

Philippe Grégoire is a Canadian film director and screenwriter from the small village of Napierville, Quebec, whose debut feature film The Noise of Engines (Le Bruit des moteurs) was released in 2021 and is shown on Sooner. Philippe shares some insides how Noise Of Engines was created - a quite personal and nostalgic movie that was shot in his hometown with its inabitants that love car race. The film received three Canadian Screen Award nominations at the 10th Canadian Screen Awards in 2022, including a Best Director nod for Grégoire and the John Dunning Best First Feature Award.

We talked with him about his motivation to become a filmmaker and what inspires him. Growing up with very open minded parents he had the chance to study film and started his first projects together with his friends influenced by Cinéma québécois which is part of the québeque culture. Paul Scheufler, born in 1998 in Graz, Austria, is an up-and-coming director currently studying at the renowned Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. Paul showed an early passion for filmmaking and was able to create several fictional and documentary short films as a writer and director during a training in Film & MultimediaArt. These versatile talents also led Paul to the stage as an actor in youth theaters in Graz.

Paul's latest movie "EVERYTHING HAS AN END" is running on SOONER. The movie premiered at the Federal Festival of Young Film 2022 and was created during his studies at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. The film tells the story of Helen, a middle-aged woman who sells sausages from a mobile food stand. However, her customers ignore her until she decides to break out of her role. The film addresses issues such as precarious work situations and the pressure of societal expectations. Paul describes the film as a call to sometimes do something wrong and to intuitively listen to one's own needs. “Go Helen!” is not just a slogan, but a call for self-empowerment.

Sandra Hüller was born on April 30, 1978 in Suhl, Thuringia, and grew up in the small town of Friedrichroda. As a child of the former GDR, she experienced a childhood that was shaped by the political and social conditions of the time. Her parents both worked in education, which may have sparked her interest in art and culture at an early age. The fall of the Berlin Wall during her youth had a formative influence on her development.

At the age of 17, Hüller ventured to Berlin, where she applied to the renowned Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts and was accepted. This decision marked the beginning of her professional acting career. During her training, she already showed her extraordinary talent and her willingness to take artistic risks. One example of this was her innovative interpretation of Juliet's monologue from “Romeo and Juliet”, in which she portrayed the role in an unconventional way.

After graduating from the Ernst Busch Academy in 2003, Hüller began her career in the theater. Instead of staying in Berlin, she opted for an engagement at a theater southwest of Leipzig. This move allowed her to develop and refine her skills away from the Berlin limelight. She then moved to Switzerland, where she joined the Theater Basel ensemble.

Hüller's talent was quickly recognized and she received important awards. In 2003, the year she graduated, she was named best young actress by the trade magazine “Theater heute”. This was the beginning of a series of accolades that recognized her outstanding performances on stage.

Her portrayal of Gretchen in Goethe's “Faust” at the Schauspielhaus Basel in 2002 was particularly noteworthy and earned her great recognition. This role demonstrated early on her ability to embody complex characters with depth and nuance.

Despite her later success in film, Hüller remained loyal to the theater. She regularly returned to the stage and proved her versatility in various productions. Her dedication to theater and her continuous development as an actress laid the foundation for her later successful career in film and television.

Early film rolesSandra Hüller began her film career after a successful time in the theater. She made her screen debut in 2006 in Hans-Christian Schmid's film “Requiem”. In this film, she played the lead role of Michaela Klingler, a young woman from a strict Catholic family who suffers from epileptic seizures and believes she is possessed by demons. This role was an enormous challenge, as she had to embody a complex and emotionally charged character.

Hüller's performance in “Requiem” was so convincing that she immediately attracted the attention of critics and audiences alike. Her performance was described as “harrowing and haunting”. For this role, she was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 56th Berlin International Film Festival. This marked a significant milestone in her career and opened the doors to further challenging roles in German and international cinema.

Director Hans-Christian Schmid recalled how impressed he was by Hüller's talent at the audition: “You could see everything in her face, even the tears. It was clear even then that she was incredibly creative. Someone with less talent plays almost the same thing over four takes. Sandra has a lot of imagination, she always comes up with new ideas”.
