Toro

Toro tells the story of two friends who could hardly be more different: the irritable Toro and the sensitive Victor. Both earn their money through prostitution. While Toro saves up for a future together and a better life, Victor increasingly breaks down due to his drug use. When money debts catch up with him, Victor puts their friendship at risk. Director Martin Hawie paints an uncompromising portrait of urban masculinity. The rough camera stays close to the characters, and the staging refrains from any embellishment. Paul Wollin shines as the internally torn title character, who vacillates between caring and aggression. Shot on location, the film feels like a snapshot of a world in which tenderness and brutality are inextricably linked. TORO was produced at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg.
