And You Belong

Directed by Julia Ostertag

Trailer

AND YOU BELONG turns queer Berlin performance into a music documentary about identity, belonging, and the refusal of easy categories and norms.

Synopsis

AND YOU BELONG offers a vivid portrait of queer Berlin through the duo Scream Club, with Cindy Wonderful and Sarah Adorable at its center. Their music, style and presence refuse neat labels, and Julia Ostertag follows them as part of a wider scene shaped by performance, friendship and defiance. Around Scream Club, the film brings in other artists from the same circle and lets their work expand the picture of a subculture that is playful, loud and visibly self-invented. The closeness between the people on screen is clear, yet their private histories are kept only partly in view, which gives the film both intimacy and distance. Built from concert recordings, private archive footage, music videos and Ostertag’s own camera work, AND YOU BELONG moves with energy and occasional intensity. The film gains speed through its varied images, but its structure remains loose, and that looseness becomes part of the experience. Instead of a single explanatory line, it offers fragments of encounters, performances and attitudes that point back to a shared refusal of fixed categories. What emerges is a film about identity, visibility and the limits of classification. AND YOU BELONG shows a creative scene that resists being reduced to one simple story, while also making clear how hard it can be for outsiders to fully enter that world. It is a distinctive document of queer musical culture, and AND YOU BELONG invites viewers to approach it with curiosity.
