In a war-torn city, a story of courage and heroism unfolds that profoundly shapes the lives of those involved.
Synopsis
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Trebinje. During the Bosnian war, Muslim kiosk owner Haris is harassed, threatened and attacked by Serbian officer Todor and three other soldiers in the middle of the town square. Marko, a young Serbian soldier, happens to be nearby with his friend Nebojsa, sees the incident and intervenes.
Twelve years after the incident, the characters continue to live in the shadows of those days. Marko's father, Ranko, rebuilds a church and meets a young man whose father was involved in the murder of his son. In another city, Marko's friend Nebojsa, now a respected surgeon, struggles with his past when he has to save the life of one of the perpetrators, who is seriously injured.
A film about courage. About recurring doubts, about necessity and the attempt at reparation. A film about guilt. About cowardice and helplessness. About the path to realizing that revenge is futile. A film about forgiveness. About possible reconciliation. The film is based on a real incident regarding the act. The events of the present are fictional.
The film, which is based on real events, was a hit at international film festivals and won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival. It raises profound questions about the nature of guilt and forgiveness and the possibility of going beyond deeply rooted prejudices and finding healing through reconciliation. CIRCLES – KRUGOVI impressively shows how the heroic actions of an individual can create waves that influence the lives of many people.
