Hao ji le

HAO JILE unfolds on the bleak edge of a city, where Xiao Zhang steals a bag of money from a courier serving a local mafia boss. The theft sets off a grim chain reaction, and the promise of easy cash quickly turns into a day no one can call good. As the bag changes hands and slips through wrong turns, the mob boss sends his enforcer to get it back. Xiao Zhang is not especially bright, and neither are the people who cross his path, so mistrust, anger and clumsy choices keep pushing the situation toward disaster. The film uses the shape of a gangster story to examine greed, envy and the hard, impatient life of people left on the margins. Instead of fantasy, HAO JILE stays close to a rough urban reality of construction sites, internet cafés and billiard halls, where dreams of a better life are reduced to loitering and resentment. Liu Jian presents his second animated feature after Piercing I as a sparse, unsentimental noir, with detailed but often static images and very little dialogue. HAO JILE turns a familiar warning about money into a black fable, and that dry clarity gives the film its force. It's a bleak work, but an effective one.
