Ludwig van Beethoven - 3. Sinfonie

Directed by Jellie Dekker

Dutch conductor and recorder player Frans Brüggen conducts Beethoven's 3rd with the Orchestra of the 18th Century, which he founded.

Synopsis

The orchestra, which specializes in 19th-century historical performance practice, was founded by Brüggen in 1981. This stunning interpretation of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, live from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, has drawn international acclaim. Beethoven originally dedicated the "Eroica" (1804) to Napoleon, who at the time was redrawing the map of Europe as fundamentally as this monumental symphony was to redefine the architecture of music. Only later did the composer realize that "heroes" with absolute political power can quickly become tyrants and therefore withdrew the dedication.
