In Denis Villeneuve's feature film debut, a young model narrowly escapes death and endeavors to give her life new meaning by becoming a mother.

In Denis Villeneuve's feature film debut, a young model narrowly escapes death and endeavors to give her life new meaning by becoming a mother.

After a car accident, model Simone decides to give her life new meaning by becoming a mother. She asks her best friend Philippe to impregnate her, which he agrees to on the condition that the conception takes place in the desert. Together they embark on a journey from Montreal to the salt flats of Utah. Once there, they are confronted with existential questions about love, friendship, and the meaning of life.

The film was shown in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998 and was Canada's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 71st Academy Awards. It also won the Bayard d'Or for Best Film at the Namur International Film Festival of French-Language Films.

Critics praised the film's visual design, particularly the use of salt flats as a symbol of emptiness and infinity. Pascale Bussières' portrayal of Simone was highlighted for its depth and nuance.

With AUGUST 32ND ON EARTH, Denis Villeneuve laid the foundation for his later works, in which he combines complex themes with visual brilliance. The film remains a fascinating introduction to the work of one of the most important directors in contemporary cinema.
