As a counterpoint to elitist "museum art", Mary Bauermeister founded her own art movement in the 1960s. Artists, scientists and philosophers from all walks of life went in and out of her studio to indulge in the spirit of avant-garde. For example, she made art history with personalities such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Nam June Paik.
