After a global catastrophe, only a few people are left alive - nearly all of them men. Barely able to speak, they are in a constant struggle for water, food and for access to the few remaining women. Luc Besson's directorial debut was filmed primarily among ruins in Paris: a former Électricité de France building, which was demolished the day after filming was completed, and the wasteland where the Bibliothèque nationale de France was later built.
