Marcos' life as a farmer's son in Argentina lacks excitement. His daily routine is determined by hard work on the ranch, and his homophobic family adheres strictly to gender roles. However, Marcos is interested in boys, whom he tries to get closer to by flirting as his alter ego “Marilyn.” Because of his homosexual tendencies, Marcos soon experiences rejection from his family and peers, but also finds his first love in the handsome Federico. As those around him become increasingly hostile, Marcos feels forced to break out of his conservative life. MARILYN by Martín Rodríguez Redondo is based on a true story and tells of the challenges faced by a young person who has to assert himself in a hostile environment. With impressive sensitivity, the film shows the conflicts between family obligations, social intolerance and personal striving for acceptance. Walter Rodríguez's haunting performance gives the story a special depth and makes the inner turmoil of the main character tangible. The film celebrated its premiere in the Panorama section at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival. It was also screened at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, the Guadalajara International Film Festival and the BFI Flare: London LGBTQ+ Film Festival. With its empathetic storytelling and strong characterization, MARILYN received international praise and was celebrated as a powerful portrait of social oppression.
