Directed by Godehard Giese

Trailer

On a Mediterranean island, an author loses herself in the story of her landlady and in her own painful past.

Synopsis

Successful author Charlotte has retreated to a Mediterranean island to write her new novel. She draws inspiration from the lives of others. Her landlady Renate, who has been waiting for her husband to return for years, seems to be a perfect model for Charlotte's main character, the wife of an astronaut. But the deeper Charlotte delves into Renate's life, the more she is confronted with her own painful past. DIE GESCHICHTE VOM ASTRONAUTEN deals with the void left behind by a loved one when they are gone. A void, a negative, silent, occupied by memory, by absence, by loss. We search for strategies to find a language for the silence. We try to maintain the interrupted communication within ourselves. DIE GESCHICHTE VOM ASTRONAUTEN is a ghost story of abandoned lovers in search of a new voice. The film premiered at the International Hof Film Festival, where it was celebrated as an impressive directorial debut. Invitations to other festivals such as the Hamburg Film Festival and the Max Ophüls Prize Festival followed. DIE GESCHICHTE VOM ASTRONAUTEN received the German Film Critics' Award for Best New Director and was praised for its visual clarity and the restrained but deeply emotional performance of Godehard Giese himself. The intimate camera work, the atmosphere of isolation, and the quiet, almost meditative narrative style make the film an extraordinary work in German auteur cinema. A poetic look at the human need to find meaning in loss.
