New midwives Sofia & Louise navigate the chaotic world of a flawed healthcare system, facing tough challenges in their daily hospital duties.
Synopsis
Sofia and Louise have just completed their training as midwives and start their first jobs together in a public maternity ward. Full of idealism and determination, they quickly discover that the reality of hospital life is far more demanding than they imagined. Staff shortages, constant emergencies and an endless flow of patients leave little time for the attentive care they hoped to provide.
Thrown directly into the intense rhythm of the ward, the two friends must learn how to handle births, medical complications and difficult decisions while coping with exhaustion and emotional strain. As the pressure of the job grows, their friendship is also put to the test.
With empathy and realism, director Léa Fehner portrays the demanding everyday life of a profession that is essential yet often undervalued. MIDWIVES (Sages-femmes) offers an intimate look at the dedication, doubts and resilience of those who accompany the arrival of new life.
The film premiered at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival in the Panorama section, where it received the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.
