LE RETOUR begins with an offer that changes the terms of a family trip. Khédidja, who works as a nanny for a wealthy Parisian family, is invited to bring her two teenage daughters, Jessica and Farah, to Corsica while she looks after the family’s children. For the girls it promises sun and freedom; for Khédidja it is a return to an old home marked by pain. Fifteen years earlier, she left the island with her younger children under tragic circumstances. Back on Corsica, Khédidja is forced to live with memories she has not resolved, while Jessica and Farah drift into beach days, new acquaintances and first love. Their summer pleasure gradually meets the family history their mother carries, and the question of what really happened begins to surface without ever becoming simple. The film looks closely at social inequality and at the way family stories are told, repeated and disputed. Khédidja moves between her professional role in a privileged Parisian household and the private burden of her past, while her daughters experience the island with curiosity and independence. LE RETOUR creates its tension through generational distance, emotional restraint and the quiet pressure of memory. Directed by Catherine Corsini, LE RETOUR was in competition at Cannes, opened Filmfestival Cologne and was also shown during the French Film Weeks. The cast includes Aïssatou Diallo Sagna, Esther Gohourou, Suzy Bemba, Lomane de Dietrich, Virginie Ledoyen and Denis Podalydès. LE RETOUR stands as a thoughtful summer drama about identity, inheritance and the stories families carry. It is well worth discovering.
