VARIETY follows Christine, a young woman in New York who takes a job selling tickets at a porn theater. Sitting between the street and the auditorium, she watches a constant stream of customers pass through her booth while becoming increasingly fascinated by the world that surrounds the cinema. In VARIETY, the city, the theater and Christine’s gaze gradually become inseparable. When one of the regular customers invites her to a baseball game and then abruptly disappears, Christine begins to follow him. Curiosity slowly turns into obsession, leading her through anonymous streets, waterfront markets and hints of a shadowy criminal underworld. At the same time, her relationship with her journalist boyfriend grows more distant, while concerned messages from her friend and her mother accumulate on her answering machine. The film revolves around the act of looking itself. Bette Gordon reverses the traditional dynamics of cinematic desire: instead of a woman being watched, VARIETY places a woman in the position of observer, investigator and pursuer. Through windows, doorways, mirrors and frames within frames, the film transforms the pornographic space into a site where desire, fantasy and the limits of representation are constantly questioned. Pornography functions less as spectacle than as a means of exploring how longing is produced, sustained and deferred. Gordon has noted that she wanted pornography to appear only sparingly, often through sound, fragments and suggestion, allowing viewers to construct their own images. This approach also informs the film’s famously open ending, which leaves desire unresolved rather than fulfilled. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 1983 and later screening in competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, VARIETY became a landmark of American independent and feminist cinema.
