SELF-CRITICISM OF A BOURGEOIS DOG follows Julian, an aspiring filmmaker struggling to finance his next project. Forced to take seasonal work at an apple orchard, he pretends to be researching a communist fairy tale while trying to impress Camille, a young Canadian woman he has just met. What begins as an awkward romance gradually develops into a playful reflection on art, politics and social class. At the orchard, Julian finds himself among seasonal workers whose everyday realities challenge his romantic ideas about revolution. As friendships form and tensions emerge, the boundaries between fiction and reality begin to dissolve. Blending deadpan humor with fairy-tale elements, the film repeatedly questions the role of the intellectual and the distance between political ideals and lived experience. Mixing romantic comedy, political satire and fantasy, Julian Radlmaier creates a self-reflexive film in which the filmmaker himself becomes both protagonist and object of criticism. Beneath its absurd humor lies a thoughtful exploration of privilege, labor and the uneasy relationship between art and political commitment. SELF-CRITICISM OF A BOURGEOIS DOG had its world premiere in the Bright Future Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2017 before celebrating its German premiere in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section of the Berlin International Film Festival. The film later received the German Film Critics' Award for Best Feature Film Debut, establishing Julian Radlmaier as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary German cinema.
