Kontinental '25

KONTINENTAL '25 begins with a death in a Cluj basement and follows Orsolya, a bailiff caught between official duty and private guilt. Radu Jude turns the aftermath into a tense urban satire about a woman trying to keep moving while the city keeps pressing back. Orsolya's path is built from conversations rather than action. She meets lovers, brokers, priests and activists, and each exchange reopens the same wound: why did this happen, who is responsible, and what can be done when no answer feels enough? The film does not search for easy catharsis, but for the friction that remains when grief meets everyday life. Through housing shortage, nationalism, Orthodox morality, racism and liberal hypocrisy, the film sketches a present in which disputes multiply and solutions disappear. Jude's method, as described here, is deliberately abrasive: smartphone images, static setups and a barrage of dialogue replace classical composition and force attention onto social contradiction. KONTINENTAL '25 treats repetition itself as part of the condition it portrays. The film is presented as both homage and provocation in relation to Roberto Rossellini's Europa '51, shifting a spiritual journey of redemption into a secular, argumentative world. It also sits within Jude's recent work, after Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn and Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, and the director won a Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the last Berlinale.
