DJ AHMET turns a North Macedonian village story into a gentle drama about grief, tradition and first love under mounting social pressure today.
Synopsis
DJ AHMET follows 15-year-old shepherd Ahmet as he rides through the North Macedonian hills with a homemade sound system strapped to his tractor. The bass-heavy beats turn the landscape into a private escape, far from the conservative village that surrounds him. In DJ AHMET, music is not a hobby but a lifeline, a way to imagine another future.
Ahmet's dream life runs into stubborn reality. The nearest disco is impossibly far away, the internet speed in the village is miserable, and his strict father does everything he can to drive the love of music out of him. Only his mute brother Naim shares his fascination, giving Ahmet one fragile ally at home. Their shared listening becomes a quiet act of resistance.
When Aya arrives next door after returning from Germany, the balance shifts. She comes with confident style, a taste for freedom, a love of TikTok dances and a phone with unlimited data. Secret raves in the fields draw Ahmet and Aya together, but their growing closeness is shadowed by an engagement already planned for her. DJ AHMET turns that tension into a story about desire, choice and the pressure to conform.
With black humour, music passion and clear affection for its characters, DJ AHMET presents youthful rebellion in the age of social media. Georgi M. Unkovski shapes the meeting of two outsiders into a tragicomic search for love and for a place in a society built on uniformity. DJ AHMET remains intimate, playful and pointed all at once, inviting viewers into a world where every beat matters.
