EUROPA sends Leopold Kessler, a young man returning from New York to Frankfurt am Main, into a railway system that carries postwar exhaustion inside a polished first-class shell. His first assignment as a sleeping-car attendant opens a world where class, duty and suspicion are already tightly bound. Under the guidance of his uncle, Leopold is equipped with a uniform, checked by medical exams and placed on a new sleeping car for first-class travelers. On the train he meets Katharina Hartmann, daughter of the Zentropa owner, and the encounter draws him toward intimacy while also deepening the sense that he is entering a space designed to control him. The film connects personal disillusionment to the larger moral damage of the immediate postwar period. Refugees and the homeless crowd the station outside, while inside the train privilege continues to function, and EUROPA uses that contrast to show how quickly idealism can be tested by institutions, family loyalties and social hierarchy. The result is less a conventional thriller than a stark study of dependence and compromise. Lars von Trier's fourth feature closes his EUROPA trilogy, following The Element of Crime and Epidemic, and the source material notes its Special Jury Prize at Cannes. It is also described as drawing on film noir alongside Tarkovsky, Fritz Lang, Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles, with hypnotic black-and-white images and selective colour passages. EUROPA remains a severe, lucid descent into a damaged era. It rewards close viewing.
