Producing is not just about raising money and writing shooting schedules. For Kim Münster, it's a creative process—full of risk, trust, and having each other's backs. For ten years, she has run her production company Treibsand Film and builds spaces where cinematic visions can be realized without being slowed down.

After studying cinematography in Dortmund, she began early on to produce her own projects and take on responsibility in productions. Today, she works on documentary formats, hybrid short films, and educational projects—always with a social focus and a distinctive artistic style.

For her, producing doesn't mean control, but enabling. She sees her role as a creative partner who protects visions, empowers teams, and shares risks—financially, artistically, and structurally. Producers, to her, are the ones who make films possible and have people's backs, rather than slowing them down.

Alongside her production work, Kim is involved in film policy—in Filmbüro NW and in the Dokomotive collective. There, she advocates for fair structures, visibility, and film as a cultural asset. One of her focuses: children's film as an influential medium for future generations, which often gets overlooked in funding strategies and needs more attention.

In conversation, he discusses why short film is not a stepping stone for him, but rather an independent format. It’s a space that allows artistic freedom, yet is often overlooked. As a child of the former GDR, she experienced a childhood that was shaped by the political and social conditions of the time. Her parents both worked in education, which may have sparked her interest in art and culture at an early age. The fall of the Berlin Wall during her youth had a formative influence on her development.

At the age of 17, Hüller ventured to Berlin, where she applied to the renowned Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts and was accepted. This decision marked the beginning of her professional acting career. During her training, she already showed her extraordinary talent and her willingness to take artistic risks. One example of this was her innovative interpretation of Juliet's monologue from “Romeo and Juliet”, in which she portrayed the role in an unconventional way.

After graduating from the Ernst Busch Academy in 2003, Hüller began her career in the theater. Instead of staying in Berlin, she opted for an engagement at a theater southwest of Leipzig. This move allowed her to develop and refine her skills away from the Berlin limelight. She then moved to Switzerland, where she joined the Theater Basel ensemble.

Hüller's talent was quickly recognized and she received important awards. In 2003, the year she graduated, she was named best young actress by the trade magazine “Theater heute”. This was the beginning of a series of accolades that recognized her outstanding performances on stage.

Her portrayal of Gretchen in Goethe's “Faust” at the Schauspielhaus Basel in 2002 was particularly noteworthy and earned her great recognition. This role demonstrated early on her ability to embody complex characters with depth and nuance.

Despite her later success in film, Hüller remained loyal to the theater. She regularly returned to the stage and proved her versatility in various productions. Her dedication to theater and her continuous development as an actress laid the foundation for her later successful career in film and television.

Early film roles Sandra Hüller began her film career after a successful time in the theater. She made her screen debut in 2006 in Hans-Christian Schmid's film “Requiem”. In this film, she played the lead role of Michaela Klingler, a young woman from a strict Catholic family who suffers from epileptic seizures and believes she is possessed by demons. It was clear even then that she was incredibly creative. Someone with less talent plays almost the same thing over four takes. Sandra has a lot of imagination, she always comes up with new ideas”.

Establishment as a leading German actress

After her breakthrough with “Requiem”, Sandra Hüller cemented her reputation as one of Germany's leading actresses. She continued to take on challenging roles and proved her versatility in both theater and film. However, her international breakthrough only came a decade later with her role in Maren Ade's comedy “Toni Erdmann” (2016).

“Toni Erdmann” became a critical and commercial success and brought Hüller international recognition. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best International Film and cemented Hüller's position as one of the most remarkable actresses of her generation.

In the years that followed, Hüller continued her impressive career, taking part in various projects that proved her versatility. She starred in films such as “Sisi & I” (2023) and received a nomination for the German Film Award for Best Actress for her performance.

Sandra Hüller has developed a unique approach to selecting and preparing for her roles. For the actress, it is an unconscious process that begins as soon as she decides on a project. She describes it as being constantly surrounded by the role: “No matter what I do, where I go, I see people or hear music, it's in relation to it.” This intuitive approach allows Hüller to immerse herself deeply in her characters without consciously focusing on them.

For certain roles, such as in “Anatomie d'une chute”, intensive language preparation was required as Hüller had to improve her French. She sees this as an opportunity to overcome boundaries: “It's no longer so important that someone speaks without an accent, nor are these boring ideas of perfection.” This openness to linguistic and cultural diversity is reflected in Hüller's ability to work in different languages and contexts.

Working with directors is an essential aspect of Hüller's artistic process. She particularly appreciates working with directors who give her creative freedom. One example of this is her work with Jonathan Glazer on “The Zone of Interest”. Hüller describes how Glazer gave the actors a lot of freedom: “Sometimes we didn't even know exactly where the cameras were. He basically left us alone with the characters and the story.”

This kind of collaboration allows Hüller to delve deeper into her roles and create authentic portrayals. She emphasizes the importance of mutual trust between actor and director: “There was an indescribable amount of freedom you have as an actor because you don't have to think about lighting and markings.”

Sandra Hüller has her roots in the theater and continues to maintain a close connection to the stage. She particularly appreciates the rehearsal process in the theater: “I really like this process, the routine of six or eight weeks together in the same room. The shared thinking, the trying, the failing and how much the body is involved. I just love it.”

Despite her success in film, Hüller regularly returns to the theater. She sees the theater as a safe place where she feels comfortable and knows what she is doing. This balance between theater and film allows her to explore and develop different aspects of her art.
