Ich bin Anastasia

The film tells the story of Anastasia Biefang, a transgender woman, and her career as a lieutenant colonel in the German Armed Forces. At the height of her career in the German Armed Forces, she decides to live as the woman she feels she is. To her own surprise, coming out as a transgender woman in the German Armed Forces does not harm her career. Immediately after her gender reassignment, she took over the Information Technology Battalion in Storkow, Brandenburg. She is the first transgender person in the history of the German Armed Forces to hold this position. The film accompanies Anastasia through her transition process and follows her as she takes up her post as commander. Her new battalion also has to undergo a mental transition. I AM ANASTASIA was released in 2019 and premiered at DOK.fest Munich, where it was praised by audiences and critics alike. The film won the audience award at DOK.fest Munich and was subsequently shown at numerous festivals, including the Queer Film Festival Munich, the Filmfest Schleswig-Holstein, and the Human Rights Film Festival in Berlin. It also received the German Film Critics' Award in the Best Documentary Film category. The film was produced by Filmgarten and MissingFILMs in cooperation with Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg. Through his sensitive staging and personal closeness to Anastasia Biefang, Thomas Ladenburger succeeds in painting a precise portrait of self-determination and social change within the German Armed Forces.
