What does aging mean in a society where people are living longer and longer? Using a friend’s camera, two young filmmakers follow frequent guests of Hamburg’s FALTENROCK party scene, where entry is restricted to those 60 and older. Christian, Mechthild, Christiane, and Volker fly to China, volunteer to help refugees, search for love, and then disappear onto Facebook for three hours. Coming to terms with one’s own age is always also a confrontation with society’s images of it. The documentary FALTENROCK seeks to navigate between these images and confront us with our own notions of life in retirement. Isn’t it perhaps time to redefine old age? Retirement does not have to mean standing still. The film sensitively demonstrates that old age does not signify the end of adventure, activity, and personal growth. Instead, the protagonists experience new facets of their lives and challenge societal norms. The film FALTENROCK by Leonie Kock and Janina Rasch documents these inspiring stories with an open and humorous perspective. Without clichés or pity, it shows people who enjoy life with energy and passion. The camera accompanies them in their daily lives, on trips, while engaging in social projects, and on the dance floor—where life pulsates.
