Afeminadas

In the streets of Brazil, five performers fight with passion and dedication for visibility and acceptance. Their art, characterized by feminine forms of expression, questions social norms and challenges the public. Through their everyday lives, their performances, and their personal stories, a multi-layered picture emerges of identity, self-determination, and the struggle for recognition in an often hostile environment. EFFEMINATE is a documentary film by Wesley Gondim that follows the lives of Safira O'hara, Khryz Amusa, Chandelly Kidman, Hellena Borgyz, and Jefferson Lemons. The film highlights their individual struggles and successes without judging or commenting. This approach creates an authentic portrait of people who celebrate their femininity as an art form and transcend social boundaries in the process. The documentary addresses key issues such as LGBTQIA+ representation, gender identity, and the challenges faced by queer artists in Brazil. The film celebrated its international premiere at the BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival 2023 and was previously screened at Cine Ceará 2022 and the Festival de Brasília do Cinema Brasileiro 2022. Other festival appearances include the DIGO Film Festival 2023 in Goiás and RIO LGBTQIA+ 2023.
