Trailer

A successful lecturer juggles career, affair, and family. Returning home forces her to confront the true cost of her independence.

Synopsis

Clara has it made. Far from the East German countryside, she leads an independent life as a lecturer in Berlin and is working on her doctorate in philosophy. Between professional ambitions, an affair with one of her students and the demanding relationship with her doctoral supervisor Margot, little room remains for her family or the world she came from. When Clara returns to her hometown with her 15-year-old daughter for her mother Inge’s 60th birthday celebration, she is confronted with the contradictions of her own life. While she has built a life for herself in Berlin’s academic world, the distance between her present and her origins remains palpable. Conversations with her mother, encounters with old acquaintances and the expectations of her family reveal how far she has moved from her former environment—and how closely she is still connected to it. Caught between generations, social backgrounds and different ideas of how life should be lived, Clara finds herself increasingly challenged. The film carefully observes how questions of class, education and belonging are reflected in personal relationships. Rather than relying on dramatic confrontations, it focuses on the subtle differences in language, expectations and experience that can separate people from one another. Directed by Annika Pinske, ALL ABOUT THE WEATHER premiered in the Encounters section of the Berlin International Film Festival 2022. Starring Anne Schäfer, Judith Hofmann, Max Riemelt and Sandra Hüller, the film offers a nuanced portrait of a woman caught between social mobility, family ties and the enduring influence of her origins.
