Requiem

REQUIEM begins in a small town in southern Germany in the early 1970s, where Michaela Klingler finally leaves a strict Catholic home after repeated stays in hospital for epilepsy. At university in Tübingen, she tastes a wider life through Stefan and her friend Hanna, and REQUIEM follows the fragile hope that freedom might last. That hope cracks when Michaela collapses in her residence hall. What seems at first like another attack becomes something far more frightening to her: inner voices, grotesque faces and a growing certainty that she is possessed. The film turns that private fear into a conflict between medicine, religion and family loyalty. REQUIEM uses this struggle to examine how belief can comfort, trap and distort at once, especially when illness is filtered through guilt and obedience. Shown in official competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, REQUIEM remains a stark, intimate drama and invites a close look at the cost of conviction.
