Beatriz Batarda

Beatriz Batarda is one of Portugal's most versatile actresses and has established herself with her impressive performances in both European arthouse cinema and on international stages. After training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, she began a career characterized by challenging roles and a close connection to auteur cinema. In THE PORTUGUESE NUN (2009) by Eugène Green, she plays the lead role of Madalena, an actress who experiences a spiritual awakening during filming in Lisbon. Green's poetic direction and Batarda's intense performance made the film a celebrated contribution to the Toronto International Film Festival program. She had previously worked with directors such as José Álvaro Morais in Peixe Lua (2000) and Marco Martins in Alice (2005) – both films cemented her reputation as a strong character actress in modern Portuguese cinema.
