Fritz Roth

Fritz Roth was a German actor who appeared in numerous film and television productions as a distinctive character actor. With his unmistakable presence, he often embodied characters with quiet authority and great humanity. He became particularly well known for his role as police officer Wolfgang Neumann in the ARD series Polizeiruf 110, in which he appeared regularly from 2010 onwards. He also appeared in Tatort, SOKO Köln, In aller Freundschaft, and Babylon Berlin, leaving a lasting impression with his precise acting. In cinema, Roth demonstrated his versatility in works such as Good Bye, Lenin! (2003), Sommer vorm Balkon (2005), The Reader (2008), and Die Reste meines Lebens (2017). A particular highlight of his career was the role of Gerd in Muxmäuschenstill (2004), for which he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the German Film Awards. In 2014, Fritz Roth appeared in KAFKA'S THE BUILDING, directed by Jochen Alexander Freydank. In this Kafkaesque parable, he played Guard II and contributed to the film's dense atmosphere with his controlled performance. Two years later, he took on the role of Dieter Kowalski in TRANSIT, a drama by Oliver Meinborn. The film was screened at the International Hof Film Festival and was produced by ifs Cologne. Both films demonstrated Roth's ability to create emotional depth even in quiet moments. For his acting achievements, Fritz Roth was posthumously awarded the New Berlin Film Award at the Achtung Berlin Film Festival in 2017, which honored his life's work and his significance for German cinema. Until his death in 2022, he remained closely connected to German film and television and is now considered one of the most influential character actors of his generation.
