Silvio Orlando
ActorBorn in Naples in 1957, Silvio Orlando is a major figure in Italian cinema and theatre. He began his career on stage in the 1970s before establishing himself in film at the end of the 1980s. Orlando is particularly known for his long-standing collaborations with directors such as Nanni Moretti, appearing in films including Palombella rossa (1989), The Son’s Room (2001), The Caiman (2006) and A Brighter Tomorrow (Il sol dell’avvenire, 2023).
He gained international recognition for his portrayal of Cardinal Angelo Voiello in Paolo Sorrentino’s television series The Young Pope (2016) and its follow-up The New Pope (2020).
Orlando has received numerous awards throughout his career. At the Venice Film Festival he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for his performance in Giovanna’s Father (Il papà di Giovanna, 2008). He has also won several David di Donatello Awards, including Best Actor for The Caiman (2006) and again for Ariaferma (2021).
With his distinctive blend of subtle humor, emotional depth and precise character work, Silvio Orlando is widely regarded as one of the leading actors of contemporary Italian cinema.
