ActorDirectorNanni Moretti, born in 1953 in Bruneck (South Tyrol, Italy), is one of the most influential figures in contemporary Italian cinema, often combining the roles of director, screenwriter and actor in his films. Since the 1970s he has been a key voice in European auteur cinema. After his debut Io sono un autarchico (1976), he developed a distinctive style in films such as Ecce Bombo (1978) and Palombella rossa (1989), blending personal observation, humor and political reflection.
Moretti gained international recognition with Dear Diary (Caro diario, 1993), for which he won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. His greatest international success came in 2001 when his drama The Son’s Room (La stanza del figlio) won the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
Alongside his work as a director, Moretti is also a producer and founded the production company Sacher Film, through which he has produced many of his own films as well as works by other Italian filmmakers. His films—often marked by autobiographical elements, social observation and political satire—are regularly selected for the competition sections of major international festivals, including his more recent works Tre piani (2021) and A Brighter Tomorrow (Il sol dell’avvenire, 2023).
