Closet Monster

Oscar is young, creative, in love with his fantasy-inspired art, and has a huge problem: he lives in the deepest backwater of Newfoundland alone with his eccentric father. Every now and then, he does his best friend Gemma's makeup and tries to cope with a traumatic childhood experience that constantly reminds him that it can be dangerous to live openly gay in this town. The sensitive teenager also works part-time at a hardware store, where he meets the rebellious and recklessly attractive Wilder, who prefers smoking joints to sorting screws... CLOSET MONSTER by Canadian director Stephen Dunn is a coming-of-age drama that combines elements of magical realism and body horror to depict the inner world of the protagonist. The lead role of Oscar is played by Connor Jessup, whose portrayal authentically captures the emotional depth and complexity of the character. The voice of the hamster Buffy is spoken by Isabella Rossellini, which gives the film an additional special touch. CLOSET MONSTER premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won Best Canadian Feature Film. The film has received numerous other awards, including Best Director and Best Screenplay at the Atlantic Film Festival and Best Feature Film at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival.
