One day he learns that his classmate Basini has stolen money from a classmate. But the two leaders of the class, Beineberg and Reiting, do not report the theft - they take Basini's punishment into their own hands. Volker Schlöndorff's celebrated directorial debut is a congenial adaptation of Robert Musil's novel The Confusions of Young Törleß. The depicted physical and psychological confrontations not only reflect the situation in an Austrian boarding school during the Empire, but also comment on the politically charged climate of the time.
