The Old Gun

Le vieux fusil

Directed by Robert Enrico

Trailer

The Wehrmacht massacre at Oradour in 1944, filmed with Philppe Noiret and Romy Schneider in 1975. Hated by the German critics, loved by the French.

Synopsis

And just like that the film disappeared in Germany and with it the scandal. In France it won the César, yet in Germany it was roundly criticized by 'Der Spiegel' and others. The Germans were 'caricatures', 'drunkenly lecherous, loudmouthed, cowardly, brutal', it was all about 'bloody effects', as even the Catholic Film Service found. Too close to the truth, perhaps? Not enough, in the German dub the text was changed, to the annoyance of Romy Schneider, who refused to speak the text. So in the dub the German voice was not Romy Schneider, and in the GDR another dub was made, again without Romy. Result: the film disappeared, and has thus remained one of Schneider's most unknown works. A classic available in the French OV and the German dub.
